How to get the best exchange rate when sending money abroad

Guides · 6 min read · Updated September 2026

The exchange rate decides how much of your money survives the journey — far more than the fee does. A 3% margin hidden in the rate costs £30 on every £1,000, while most transfer fees are under £5. Here are the four levers that actually move the number.

Currency exchange rates sign

1. Start from the mid-market rate

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between buy and sell prices on global markets — the "true" rate you see on Google. Nobody can trade exactly at it, but the closer a provider sits to it, the better your deal. Before accepting any quote, search the rate online and compare: a gap above 1% means you're paying a hidden margin.

2. Unbundle the rate from the fee

Providers love advertising "zero fees" while widening the rate margin to 4% or more. Always judge the total: recipient amount divided by what you pay. An honest quote shows both numbers separately — which is exactly how Swiftsettle Pay prices every transfer.

3. Time the market, don't chase it

Major corridors routinely swing 1–2% within a month around rate decisions and data releases. If your transfer isn't urgent, watch for a week and set a target. Our analysis shows alert users capture around 0.8% better rates simply by letting the market come to them.

  • Set a Rate Alert at a level you'd be happy with.
  • Read the Monday briefing before moving large sums.
  • Avoid converting in the hour after major announcements.

4. Match the method to the amount

Card funding is fastest but carries processing costs that matter on big sums; bank funding is slower and cheaper. As a rule of thumb: card below £2,000 for speed, bank transfer above it for value — and a Spot Contract when the amount is large and the rate is right.

The bottom line

Compare against the mid-market rate, judge the total cost, give timing a week when you can, and fund big transfers by bank. Do those four things and you'll consistently land in the top 10% of retail rates — without becoming a currency trader.
